Mexico

A group of 23 villages in the Sierra del Sur mountains of Oaxaca, Mexico, the 21 de Septiembre cooperative from Putla, Oaxaca separated from a larger coffee organization in search of more direct and transparent business relationships and better prices for their best beans. These cooperative members managed small plots of coffee in what many roasters consider to be the best region for coffee in Oaxaca.

By establishing itself as independent coffee organization, the 21 de Septiembre can now realize the true value of their coffee quality. Once they had begun working with Sustainable Harvest and meeting buyers like Counter Culture, Taylor Maid and Allegro/Whole Foods, some of the most selective coffee roasters in the US market,. they found markets mmediately for all of the co-op’s coffee. The cup is startlingly impressive, and considered the best of all Mexico. Mark Inman, roastmaster of Taylor Maid explains: "Grown at altitudes ranging from 1,200-1,800 meters, the cup quality of this coffee is sweet, fruity and deliciously citrus with notes of semi-sweet chocolate and ripe cherries. The growers have chosen Sustainable Harvest as their exclusive buyer and Sustainable provides the co-op with milling and warehouse training, agronomy training and other logistical support."
