The theme of this year’s event was “Redesigning the Coffee Supply Chain.” Let’s Talk Coffee 2011 focused on collective actions to minimize risk and ensure the future of the industry. Throughout the event, we highlighted financial training, price risk management, quality calibration across the supply chain, technology innovations for smallholder producers, transparent business interactions, and income diversification techniques for farmers.
We have posted the presentations from the event here on our website. We hope this will enable participants to share their learning with their colleagues and co-op members who were not able to attend.
The recent rupture between Fair Trade USA and Fairtrade International has left many in the coffee and Fair Trade movement confused about the future of this certification. At Let's Talk Coffee, we invited leaders from the Fair Trade movement in North America, Europe, and Latin America to discuss the changes and provide information for their stakeholders – from the smallholder coffee producers to the retailers who sell Fair Trade certified coffee to consumers.
We've posted the questions that the Let's Talk Coffee audience posed to the leaders from Fair Trade USA, Fairtrade Canada, Fair Trade International Labelling Organizations (FLO), and the CLAC. Over the next few days, we'll also make available video from the panel discussion and presentations made by the following panel participants.
We are grateful to all the local organizations that supported this year's Let's Talk Coffee event. While we were there, the region experienced torrential rains that caused flooding and mudslides. We were saddened to see the damage around us, and as a result have raised more than $6,500 to date to contribute to rebuilding efforts. Specifically, we will be supporting the needs of the members of the APECAFE cooperative, located in several hard-hit regions of the country. If you would like to contribute, please email us at info@sustainableharvest.com.
Let’s Talk Coffee® brings the specialty coffee industry together for a three-day event, connecting them in a transparent supply chain from seed to cup. In an industry where it is often difficult for partners to meet face-to-face, Let’s Talk Coffee® provides a private forum for business partners to create and maintain open lines of communication, humanizing their business relationships and bringing the Relationship Coffee model to life. Participation in Let's Talk Coffee is by invitation only.
